Ron Simpson
This year Ron celebrates his eightieth birthday and he has decided that, at the end of May, he will retire from "The Plan". Ron has served our circuit generously and faithfully for many years. He has preached the gospel with passion and led worship with a simple dignity. We mark his retirement with sincere gratitude.
Ron's final service will be conducted at Kirkbymoorside on the morning of Sunday May 30th

5th Feb Jim and Mary Douglas-Hunt
Readers of “Grapevine” will be saddened to hear of the deaths of Jim and Mary Douglas-Hunt. Jim served as a minister here in the early 1980’s. It was his final appointment before retirement. Jim will be remembered as a colourful character whose deep love for his Lord and passion for his calling overflowed into every aspect of his ministry. Mary, a teacher and Local Preacher, was the perfect foil to Jim’s more extrovert characteristics. With a quiet dignity she created and maintained a secure home for their two daughters and a place of generous welcome and hospitality. A teacher and Local Preacher she made her own distinctive contribution to the communities and churches that they served. Shortly after celebrating their sixtieth wedding anniversary they both moved into residential care in Kirkby Stephen. Jim died on the 29th November 2009 aged ninety and Mary died just two weeks later.

CHRISTMAS 2009
As expected the Advent/Christmas period was full of excitement, joy …..and hard work! Many thanks to those who helped in all sorts of different ways. Our first lantern procession was very successful (despite the ice and a temperature of -10oC!) and our first Christingle service was appreciated.
CHURCH MEMBERSHIP
This year’s Church Membership (confirmation) service will be on Pentecost Sunday 23rd May. Taking Church Membership means accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, standing up and being counted as one of his followers and as a member of his church. Please have a word with our minister if you want to explore what all this means.
RCC Songs of Praise
Each year in the ‘Week’ of Prayer for Christian Unity Ryedale Christian Council arrange a popular ecumenical Songs of Praise. This year it will be at 6.30pm on Sunday 24th January at All Saints’, Helmsley.
THE CHURCH FAMILY
David and Vivienne thank everyone for their kind greetings for Christmas and the New Year.
Deaths: Neil Ford (Margaret Larke’s son)
Dear God,
Thank you for your comforting presence in our lives when we feel helpless and unsure of how to face the days ahead. Thank you for filling us with feelings of joy and thankfulness when life is good, and help us always to remember that in all situations in life, you are there watching over each one of us.

6th Sept We are sorry to announce that Betty Wilson died in the early morning of Friday 4th September. She had suffered a stroke a little while ago and has been in the Friarage Hospital in Nortallerton. She will be very much remembered in Ryedale for her life and work for the circuit and for here faithful suppport for Frank, her husband in his ministry.
2nd Sept Report of the short Preachers/Worship Leaders' Meeting held at Helmsley at 4-30pm on Sunday 12th July '09
Present: Rev. David Emison, Rev. Norma Davey, Annette Gamble, George Moules, Daisy Barnes, Margaret & Ray Shore, Rosemary Wass, Ray Simpson, Jane Baben, Ruth Smith, Janet Brown, Sue Horobin, Alice & Peter Brown.
David welcomed everyone and explained that we would talk together informally café style, sharing our thoughts and prayers.
Annette led us in prayer.
We thought about those who were not able to be with us. Letters of greeting will be sent to those who are particularly in our thoughts at this time. We shared special memories of Frank's life and ministry. Sue was congratulated on receiving high marks for Section 2 of Faith & Worship. There will be a report on her service at Helmsley on 23rd August and her First Interview will take place at the next Preachers' Meeting. The reports will be submitted as part of Section 3 by the end of September.
Sue was continued on trial for the ? Quarter.
Rosemary led us in prayer.
The Rievaulx Prayer walk was a very moving experience and was attended by people from York, Driffield and Tadcaster as well as the four local Circuits. Many very enthusiastic e-mails have been received. Apparently at least three people have based Services round the event, and one person used it as part of her CLPD exploring "Worship in Quiet Places". Rosemary and David were thanked for leading the event and all the others who helped in any way.
The Worship Leaders were thanked for the part they play in leading Worship. A future joint Meeting will be held to discuss the way they feel about their work and ways in which the Preachers and Worship leaders can work more closely together.
We also discussed the possibility of having another meeting with the Anglican Lay Readers.
This part of the meeting closed with Prayer before we enjoyed a delicious tea - MANY thanks to Vivienne for all her hard work.
The Circuit Service celebrating God's call to preach the Gospel, thanksgiving and re-dedication of the Preachers was an inspiration to us all. Sue Horobin spoke very eloquently about her 'call to preach' (the first part of her oral!) and we pray that others will hear God calling them and will respond. Sincere thanks to all who led the Service with special thanks to the guest preacher, The Rev Richard Andrew, the Director of the York Institute for Community Theology and our Deputy Chair..
No notes were taken at our meeting so I suspect that memory has played a few tricks!
Please forgive. Alice
1st Sept 'Creating Safer Space'
This is the new training and information session about safeguarding children and young people within our Church which the Methodist Church is requiring all circuits across the country to provide for Church members
The first module of training is a basic awareness session for all who hold an office in the Church and therefore may come into contact with children or adults who were abused as children. It aims to equip us all to know what our responsibilities are as a Church family and to know how to respond to children and young people and who to pass information on to.
We are asking you to give one and a half hours of your time either one evening or one daytime. One hour will be spent on the informal training session and then there will be a cup of tea or coffee etc and a time for discussion, questions and the opportunity to talk to someone on a one to one basis if you want to. There will be four sessions taking place between November and April in four different Churches so that you can choose the one most suitable for you.
The sessions will be delivered by experienced circuit members and one of the ministers will also be there.
The first session will be at Helmsley on th November at 1.30 p.m.
There will be one in January (evening), one in February (evening) and one in March (daytime). Watch this space for details!

7th June
On Pentecost Sunday at St Hilda`s Beadlam we saw red. Bill Smith asked the congregation to wear something red as a symbol of the holy spirit. There was a football shirt, a dancing skirt and even a Santa hat.
Since it was the churches birthday we had a cake with two candles, one for each millenium and sang "happy birthday". All the hymns were chosen in advance by the congregation. All in all a red letter day.
29th May MISSION MATTERS
-----
-----
The following report was received in May as an update on the Nakuru Children's Home at Riziki(Circuit Mission Project 2008)
Dear All,
Riziki home construction update:-
Work on the project started with the water tank on 12/03/09 when the digging of the hole for the tank was started and was completed on 21/03/09. On 27/04/09 most of the required building materials were bought and on 28/04/09 the construction of the tank commenced with a word of prayer by Peter the builder and Diana Hogley. It was completed on the 9th April 2009 after a lot of work which included long hours of work and running up and down looking for materials. Thanks to the Almighty God we completed that stage through His power.
On 9th April 2009 the work on the main building commenced, by doing all the measurements. On 11/05/09 the digging of the trenches work started and was completed on 12/05/09. On13/05/09 the concrete foundation work started and completed on 14/05/09. On the same day 14/05/09 the 9x9 stones and some 6x9 stones work of the foundation started and four courses of stones were built all round, this was completed on 15/05/09 and levelling work started, at this stage hardcore work also started and was completed on 19/05/09. On the 20th May 2009 the concrete foundation slab was built, more than 20 people did the slab work which they completed in one day. It is now ready to build the walls, which will commence on the 22/05/09 God willing.
We thank God for enabling us to complete this first stage of the Riziki home through His power.
Although the money sent from UK has not arrived yet, the building work has been going on well using some borrowed money.
God bless.

28th May Action for Children
"Action for Children" is new name for NCH and many of you will have seen its adverts on television. Action for Children still has its roots firmly embedded in the Methodist Church and remains a charity in which we take great pride.
This year marks the 140th anniversary of the opening of the first Children's Home by Rev Thomas Bowman Stephenson and his group of Methodist friends. We shall celebrate "Action for Children" Sunday on 12th July.
Here Nicola's story illustrating on aspect of Action for Children's work:
"Not long after my eighth birthday my mum was diagnosed with having severe, progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Apart from my Nan, it was just me and Mum, so I looked after her the best I could. Gradually I became responsible for everything: cooking, cleaning, paying the bills. As time went on and her condition got even worse, I needed to bathe her, change her Catheter bags, clean her if she didn't make it to the toilet, thanks like that.
I found it really hard to concentrate at school and was nearly always late because there was so much to do at home. I was exhausted most of the time and was so worried about leaving Mum alone.
Thankfully, I had some amazing support in those final years. I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for Sean and his team at the Action for Children Young Carers' Project. They took us on day trips, played games with us, helped us make new friends…they even took us on a mini holiday!
"Action for Children" gave me what was missing from my childhood and they gave me a future too. I'm proud to say I now work for them as a project worker - now I'm determined to help more young carers. "
You can find out more about "Action for Children" at www.actionforchildren.org.uk
27th May Advance notice -Circuit Service, " A Celebration of Preaching " Sunday 12th July 6.30pm, Helmsley Methodist Church
A very special act of Worship in which we shall:
· celebrate God's call for men and women to preach the Gospel,
· give thanks for our Local Preachers
· share in their act of re-dedication.
The Rev Richard Andrew, Director of the York Institute for Community Theology and our Deputy District Chair will be our guest preacher.
26th May Rev Frank Wilson
Since Frank retired from itinerant ministry in August 1987 he and Betty have been right at the centre of our Circuit life. Betty had to retire from preaching some years ago due to ill health but Frank was able to continue his preaching ministry right to the end of his life. He regularly took four or five appointments on the Circuit plan and was always ready to step in and cover for emergencies. He should have been leading worship on the very morning following his tragic road accident.
In addition to his preaching Frank continued to serve his Lord in many other ways. He was a wise counsellor and friend to successive ministers who have served in the circuit. For many years he was our Circuit Local Preachers' Tutor. He led house groups, shared in ecumenical mid-week worship in Ampleforth and in a host of other ways was a wonderful example and friend to all of us.
It was whilst serving with the RAF in Peshawar, India that Frank received his call to ministry. The news that the atomic bomb had been dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima led him to offer himself as an ambassador for Christ's justice, peace and reconciliation. Frank believed that the only hope for a world that had witnessed such destruction lay in God's reconciling love. It was this conviction that gave passion to his preaching and inspired his great love and care for people. He served in Gibraltar, Blyth and Seaton Delaval, Ripon, Hull, Filey, Huddersfield and Richmond (Yorkshire).
Frank died in a road accident on Saturday April 25th whilst returning home from one of his regular visits to Betty. We remember him with great gratitude and continue to hold Betty in our thoughts and prayers.
Betty sends her love to all of us along with her heartfelt thanks for all the messages of love, prayer and support she has received. She is particularly grateful to everyone who share in the wonderful service at Helmsley on May 6th.

26th April It is with great sadness that we report the death of Rev Frank Wilson, who was killed in a road accident on Saturday 25th April.Since Frank and Betty retired to Ampleforth, Frank has been faithful in his ministry and always eager to serve. His kindness, wisdom and quiet presence will be sadly missed by us all. Ryedale Circuit owes him a great debt of gratitude. Our prayers are with Betty at this time of shock and sadness.

5th April Palm Sunday
A conversation on a road somewhere near Wombleton -----
'Excuse me, that's a fine pony you have there, is there any chance we could borrow it for the Palm Sunday Procession?'
'Where would that be?'
'Palm Sunday, 5th April, from Wombleton Main Street to the Village Hall'
'Well, yes, I can bring it, but I have to warn you it's never been ridden'
'That's true to the story! We did have a donkey a few years ago - but it died, and last year's pony is on holiday!' 'See you on Palm Sunday then'
bbbbbbbb
On the day there were several more echoes of the first Palm Sunday. There was a (fairly) noisy procession with singing and waving of laurel branches but I don't think there would be a 128 bus on the road into Jerusalem. We waved our laurel branches at that too.
At the village Hall we had an informal and very moving service, led by Rev David Emison who led us, in 'procession' through Good Friday to Easter Day.
Tea and biscuits on the road to Jerusalem? Perhaps not - but then, this was Wombleton!

2nd March CIRCUIT MISSION WEEKEND.
All those who took part in the Mission Weekend had a feast of interesting and helpful events. On Saturday morning twelve people enjoyed the quiet space provided at Kirkbymoorside , a quiet morning led by Rev Norma Davey. We spent time in thought, prayer or activities, based on the theme of 'Daily Bread' This was followed by a delicious lunch of home made soup (with conversation!)
In the Evening we enjoyed a wonderful concert given by folk singer Gareth Davies Jones, currently living with his family in the Tyne valley. His son James came with him to act as 'Roadie'. His superb guitar playing, beautiful voice and selection of meaningful songs, many of which were his own compositions, all combined to provide us with a first rate evening of entertainment. We were also given a lot to think about as most of his songs had a Christian message or dealt with themes like social justice and fair trading. There were a few well known songs for 'audience participation'
Listen to Gareth`s Music
During the interval there were stalls selling fair trade food and gifts, and a display about the work of Methodist Relief and Development fund, the circuit mission focus for this year.
The MRDF theme was continued in the circuit service at Helmsley on Sunday morning, when we heard the stories of people in Ethiopia and elsewhere,
helped by MRDF. A large tree was covered in paper hands as a sign of our commitment to our mission focus.
