Local Preachers:
What excuse could you find for driving around enjoying countryside views and meeting Interesting people? Where would you get the opportunity to share Teaching and Stories you've heard and read, with a dense crowd of enthusiasts? And how could you get the chance to lead community singing with a hymn with 5 lines per verse, when the organist is playing a tune with 6 lines? Yes, it's being a Preacher in the Ryedale Circuit.
Local Preachers in the Methodist Church are regular worshippers who also lead Worship and preach in churches in their own 'circuit', and occasionally in other areas and other denominations. Our 10 preachers will take a variety of services, from traditional with maybe 8 in a village congregation, to larger gatherings, probably including visiting tourists, perhaps aimed at children and parents who are not regular attenders.
Leading worship services involves the discipline of studying the Bible, keeping up-to-date with current affairs and learning to work with new technology, It means praying over (and meditating on) what God may be wanting to say to and through you.
Finally, it all becomes worth while when you get the encouraging view, as I did some years ago. 'A good service' followed quickly by a nearby heartfelt, 'If anybody could understand him', Then there is the more common 'An interesting sermon' meaning, 'I'm too polite to tell you what I really think'.
So, if you are ambitious to study your Bible and think through current issues, would like to share truths you've heard and read, have a clear voice and are able to discern if people are really asleep, or just listening with their eyes closed maybe the Holy Spirit is calling you to be a Local Preacher. As for me, what better chance will I get to tell the Superintendent Minister what I think about the Methodist Church and its leadership? Yes, I know he`s not in my congregation, but I'm confident someone will pass on my views!
